These queries have something that general keywords do not: a buyer who is ready to act and knows where they want to buy.

For most Indian small and medium businesses, ranking nationally for generic keywords ("best web designer in India") is a multi-year, high-budget effort that competes with hundreds of established agencies. Ranking locally for your specific city and category is achievable in 3–6 months with focused effort and zero budget beyond the time investment.

The Local SEO Checklist: Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the foundation of local SEO. Everything else builds on it. Run through this checklist:

  • Claim and verify your profile (postcard, phone, or video verification)
  • Business name: exact legal name, no keyword stuffing (not 'Best Plumber Mumbai — FastFix')
  • Primary category: most specific available (not 'Business' — 'Plumbing Service' or 'Web Design Agency')
  • Secondary categories: add all relevant ones
  • Address: match exactly to your website footer and all directory listings
  • Phone number: the same number on your website, with +91 country code
  • Website URL: your actual website, not a Facebook page
  • Business hours: complete and accurate, including holidays
  • Description: 750-character description with your primary keyword in the first sentence
  • Services: list every service with individual descriptions
  • Photos: minimum 10 — exterior, interior, team, products or work samples
  • Posts: publish at least one update per week (offer, event, article, or news)
  • Q&A: answer every question that appears; pre-seed common questions yourself

Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on external websites. Google uses citation volume and consistency as a local authority signal. The key is consistency — the exact same business name, address format, and phone number across every directory.

  • Justdial: highest-authority Indian local directory — claim and verify
  • IndiaMart: essential for B2B and manufacturing businesses
  • Sulekha: strong for service businesses
  • TradeIndia: B2B manufacturer and supplier directory
  • India Business Directory (ibdir.in): basic but important
  • Yellow Pages India: declining but still indexed by Google
  • MCA (Ministry of Corporate Affairs): if registered company, ensure details match
  • Consistency rule: use identical NAP across every listing — no variations in name or address format

The Local SEO Checklist: Reviews

Reviews affect both rankings and conversion. A business with 40 reviews at 4.5 stars outranks a competitor with 5 reviews at 5.0 stars in most Indian local queries. Build reviews systematically:

  • After every successful project or transaction, send a WhatsApp message with your Google review link
  • Make it personal and easy: 'If you have 2 minutes, a Google review makes a big difference for us — [link]'
  • Respond to every review within 48 hours — both positive and negative
  • Never offer incentives for reviews (Google policy violation, risk of suspension)

  • Embedded Google Map on the Contact page (exact address pin)

  • NAP consistency: address on site matches GBP and all directories exactly
  • Google Search Console: verify your site and submit sitemap.xml
